PART 2 - LYME DISEASE SYMPTOMS, DIAGNOSIS, AND TREATMENT:
Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in North America and Europe. This presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of the clinical features, diagnostic strategies, treatment options, and patient outcomes associated with Lyme disease.

Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, exposure risk, and laboratory testing, including two-tiered serologic testing. However, diagnostic challenges remain, particularly in early infection when antibody production may not yet be detectable.

Treatment primarily consists of antibiotic therapy, with doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime commonly used for early disease. More advanced stages may require intravenous antibiotics. Most patients experience full recovery with timely treatment, though some may develop persistent symptoms known as Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS).

This presentation will highlight the importance of early recognition and treatment of Lyme disease to improve patient outcomes and reduce long-term complications. Current controversies, emerging diagnostic tools, and ongoing research into PTLDS will also be discussed.
