Tour of Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN)

Located at 3300 Preble Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15233

About ALCOSAN
The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) is a nationally recognized wastewater treatment facility serving over 800,000 residents in 83 municipalities, including the City of Pittsburgh. Established in 1946, ALCOSAN is committed to protecting public health and the environment by efficiently collecting and treating up to 250 million gallons of wastewater per day. The facility plays a critical role in maintaining water quality in the region’s rivers and streams and is currently undergoing major infrastructure improvements under its Clean Water Plan to address combined sewer overflows and enhance system performance for future generations.

ALCOSAN Campus Highlights
A tour of the ALCOSAN campus offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the region’s most essential environmental facilities. Visitors can expect to see:
  • Main Treatment Plant: This is the heart of ALCOSAN’s operations, where wastewater undergoes multiple stages of treatment—including screening, grit removal, primary clarification, aeration, and disinfection—before being safely returned to the Ohio River.
  • Control Room: A high-tech operations hub where engineers monitor and manage treatment processes in real time across the facility.
  • Laboratory Services: A state-of-the-art lab where technicians perform daily testing to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and optimal water quality.
  • Energy Recovery Facilities: ALCOSAN uses processes like incineration and methane capture to generate energy from waste byproducts, showcasing its commitment to sustainability.
  • Educational & Training Centers: These areas provide space for staff development and public education, including interactive displays and presentations about water treatment and environmental stewardship.
  • Green Infrastructure & Landscaping: Parts of the campus feature stormwater management systems and native plantings, demonstrating environmentally friendly site design and green technology.
Visitors often leave with a deeper appreciation for the complexity and importance of wastewater treatment and the innovative efforts ALCOSAN is making to improve regional water quality.

Special thank you to Pittsburgh AIHA Member, Dan Davis, CEM, CES of DLZ Corp. who coordinated this event with ALCOSAN.
