ProTect-All Solutions demonstrates opportunity to reduce risk with the cultivation, processing and retail of cannabis.
The American legal cannabis industry has been rapidly expanding due to increased awareness of the plant’s therapeutic potential, as well its diverse range of applications including biofuel, textiles, building materials, food, nutritional supplement, and animal feed. This presentation will look at the opportunities to reduce risk and achieve compliance with EHS, security and individual state regulations. ProTect-All Solutions is a member of the National Cannabis Risk Management Association (NCRMA) and has provided gap analysis (compliance audits) in California, Washington and Pennsylvania. The NCRMA is an organization which educates on a variety of topics for the cannabis industry including EHS and security. We will discuss environmental, occupational health and safety risks in cannabis-related working environments, and provide suggestions for safeguarding worker health, security and compliance in this emerging industry. Cannabis harvesting and initial processing can be labor intensive, and presents a physical hazard depending on the operation. Workers may also be exposed to a variety of biological, chemical, and physical hazards, muscle trauma disorders (repetitive motion) and potential exposures to organic dusts, bioaerosols, pollen/allergens, volatile organic compounds, psychoactive substances (tetrahydrocannabinol [THC])), noise, and ultraviolet radiation. Processing facilities have similar exposures as cultivating but depending on technology of how the oils are abstracted, end product may lead to additional chemical, electrical, and mechanical hazards. Retail facilities have an increased security risk to employees and consumers visiting the locations requiring facilities to have increased security and recordkeeping requirement. Environmental and security compliance is prevalent throughout the cannabis industry. It’s ProTect-All’s experience that majority of the major players in the cannabis industry want to be educated on EHS and security risks and adopt programs to reduce risk to employee health and the environment. Most owners just are not aware of the risks and compliance demands of OSHA, EPA and licensing requirements. Education is our first step in reducing risk in this industry. Recognition, evaluation and control principles are essential for this industry. Compliance is very complex as cannabis continues to be highly controlled by federal regulations but legal in the individual states. To further complicate matters, each individual state has specific licensing requirements. Speaker Biography:Andrew Wright, CIH owner and President of ProTect-All Solutions, LLC.
