Environmental Health & Safety Manager - Dayton, OH

LORD Corporation had an opening in their Dayton, OH facility for Environmental Health & Safety Manager.   The Environmental Health & Safety Manager drives a safety focused culture through the engagement and empowerment of all team members while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.

  • Develops and implements best practice policies and procedures to assure compliance with applicable safety, health, and environmental regulations
  • Leads the Safety Committees and Emergency Response Teams across 3 shifts
  • Manages the Behavior Based Safety Program
  • Conducts or arranges employee exposure monitoring for both chemical and noise exposure in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Develops and conducts Hazard Communication and other safety, health, and environmental training
  • Creates and maintains logs, correspondence, reports, and documents and submit to governmental agencies where required.
  • Responsible for security and physical safety of our resources, and is a member of the Local Crisis Response Team
  • Implements the Emergency Response program, including the development and implementation of the Emergency Action and Evacuation Plan, and arranges for periodic evacuation drills
  • Implements other related programs including industrial hygiene monitoring, the respiratory protection, and ergonomics
  • Investigates all work-related safety and environmental incidents and assure timely root cause corrective action
  • Administers the waste disposal process to dispose of all hazardous waste efficiently and in compliance with all applicable regulations including federal and local reporting requirements
  • All other duties as assigned
Mandatory Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related field
  • 3-5 years’ experience in Environmental Health & Safety within a manufacturing facility
  • Ability to manage multiple, fluid priorities and proactively address business demands in a fast-paced environment​
  • Strong organizational and planning skills and the demonstrated ability to lead and manage projects
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems with limited information
  • Able to communicate effectively with management, and co-workers to promote strong working relationships and create an environment focused on teamwork
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills when dealing with individuals across the organization and with external customers or vendors
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Sr. Health & Safety Engineer (Industrial Hygiene Focus)

Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Provide health and safety technical guidance to ATC leaders, personnel and contractors facility operations, production and R&D projects.
  • Lead and support fatality and serious injury/illness prevention analysis, incident investigations and root causes analyses.
  • Utilize broad technical knowledge in Health & Safety to influence change management and problem solving in a highly complex and rapidly changing R&D facility, using tools such as Project EHS Review, Process Safety Assessment, FMEA, Fault Tree, Kaizen, etc.
  • Identify, assess and recommend controls for complex health and safety risks associated with R&D projects.
  • Guide site engineers and scientists to proactively incorporate best practice solutions to reduce or eliminate H&S risk on new and changing R&D processes.
  • Coach and counsel departmental leaders to assist them in the execution of their EHS accountabilities.
  • Act as single point accountable for several health and industrial hygiene programs as required by Arconic standards and self-assessment tool and applicable regulatory agencies, for areas such as Exposure Assessments, Hazardous Materials Management, Health Hazard Controls, Ergonomics, and Chemical Management; identify gaps, develop and execute action plans to close gaps; and refine management systems to enable worker safety and compliance.
  • Lead teams of non-direct reports to implement or maintain EHS programs.
  • Ensure company compliance, and assist with the administration of all state and Federal requirements including OSHA requirements and recordkeeping.
  • Facilitate training for Health programs (Chemical Specific, Employee Right to Know, TSCA etc.)
  • Work closely with and support the onsite medical services department and emergency response team.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative occupational exposure assessments of chemical and physical hazards, prepare analysis reports, review with affected employees, and provide recommendations for controlling. 
 
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to facilitate training sessions for all levels of staffing
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong analytical, problem solving skills
  • High level of adaptability to thrive in a rapidly progressing R&D environment
  • High learning agility to support risk identification, assessment and control of rapidly changing technology

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in EHS, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, or Public Health.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience managing and implementing health programs and applying OSHA regulations.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience with Industrial Hygiene requirements, instrumentation, monitoring, and measurements.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.  ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Toxic Substance Control Act Chemical inventory Requirements and 8C/8E. 
  • 3 years’ experience managing EHS programs and evaluating EHS risk in an R&D environment. 
  • Certification or working toward certification – CIH.
  • Knowledge of OSHA health and safety requirements. 
  • Knowledge of Arconic health and safety requirements.
  • PA Asbestos Building Inspector and Management Planner License preferred.

Performance Environmental Services - Industrial Hygiene- Entry Level

Description


Performance Environmental Services, Inc. in Wexford, PA is looking for talented and enthusiastic entry level professionals to conduct industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, asbestos, lead, cadmium, chromium and mold field testing services.

The ideal candidate should find it easy to work with computers and field equipment (once trained) and be able to communicate with persons of various levels from top-level clients to contractors.  In addition, the candidate must be willing to be trained in all aspects of the position requirements from site specific training to federal, state and local regulations. Although there is no specified travel percentage, it will be necessary to travel periodically to cover projects as they arise (travel costs are covered by company) as well as work overtime as needed.
The candidate should have a keen sense of attention to detail and will need to be able to manage time effectively without continuous direct monitoring.  Eventually, the applicant will be trained and hold one or more certifications as asbestos inspector, lead inspector/risk assessor, certified mold inspector, Environmental Professional or other applicable certification in applicable states.

Although we would like to see an associates or bachelor degree, it is not mandatory.  There is opportunity to advance for right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

This position functions as a Corporate Industrial Hygienist. The role has global accountability for the management of the AIHA accredited IH Lab and serve as the AIHA Lab Technical Manager.

This individual is responsible for:
  • Providing day to day support in the areas of occupational health for the Performance Coatings Business Units;
  • Internal hazard communication support for all PPG locations. 
  • The implementation of any corrective actions performed at the lab including the authority to halt work and withhold test results along with the authority to state when work can be resumed. 
  • The technical support and training for EHS users of the GPS Quick Reports, GPS Environmental Reporting and Document Manager
  • Implementation of Ergonomics in the US/CA region.
  • The IH interfaces with SBU EHS Directors and Managers and Plant EHS Staff across the corporation and must be available during at least 50 percent of the laboratory operating hours. He/She will also function as the approved signatory. 
 
Qualifications

Requirements 
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related discipline and a minimum of 5 years industrial hygiene experience. 
  • CIH designation is strongly preferred (Certified Industrial Hygienist)

SUMMARY
Plans, coordinates and conducts industrial hygiene and safety services for clients requiring application of engineering principles and technology to analyze and control conditions contributing to occupational hazards and diseases by performing the following duties:

  • Conducts plant or area surveys to determine exposures to materials or conditions such as temperatures, noise, dusts, fumes, vapors, mists, gases, solvents and radiation which are known or suspected of being real or potential detriments to health
  • Implements or recommends control measures of exposure to hazardous materials or conditions
  • Directs laboratory verification of compliance with health regulations
  • Ensures samples are promptly submitted to analytical laboratories
  • Verifies accuracy of invoices from analytical laboratories
  • Provides technical guidance to client management and labor organizations regarding health and safety related problems and correct use of personal protective equipment
  • Prepares survey reports on services provided
  • Maintains industrial hygiene survey equipment in good working order
  • Participates in the presentation of safety and health training
  • Assists in the development of safety and health programs
  • Establishes and develops client relationships
  • Develops an understanding of client needs and communicates these needs to AM H&S
  • Alerts AM H&S of client and potential client service opportunities
  • Assists in prompt and accurate preparation of project invoices
  • Ensures that data is properly entered into the computerized database
  • Ensures that the computer and hard project files are complete at project completion and are properly filed and maintained

Basic mathematical skills in order to identify and interpret sampling results. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form, and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
