    Next Event - Oct. 23, 2014 - NIOSH / NPPTL Site Visit

AIHA Pittsburgh Section will visit the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory on Thursday October 23, 2014 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  

Some of the labs that we will be visiting and projects that we will be hearing about are:
    • A Robotic Hand
    • Advanced Headform / Anthropometrics
    • Sweating Manikins
    • Respirator Sensors
We will meet in Building 19A and from there, break into smaller groups and walk to the various labs.

Important Notes Regarding Registration / Citizenship:
All participants must preregister by October 20.   Because this meeting is being held at the NIOSH facility, all attendees will be required to present valid photo identification at the entry gate for admission to the site. For U.S. citizens, a valid driver’s license is preferred.  Foreign nationals must present the same documents submitted with the visitor registration form (current passport, entry visa, or permanent residency card) at the security gate on the day of their visit.

Non-U.S. citizens – There are additional requirements for non-U.S. citizens to enter a federal facility.  In order for approval to access to be granted, all paperwork, including a copy of your passport, entry visa, or permanent residency card, must be submitted to NIOSH NPPTL by October 3, 2014

Once your registration form, indicating you are not a U.S. Citizen, is received you will receive an email from International Visitor Requests (CDC).  This email will include a link to a secure site requesting additional information.  CDC approval must be established before entry to the CDC NIOSH site will be permitted.  All foreign nationals must present the same documents submitted with the visitor registration form (current passport, entry visa, or permanent residency card) at the security gate on the day of your visit.  If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Karen Harvey at 412-386-4084.

Additional Information:

This meeting will be held at the NIOSH facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  If you are using a GPS unit to locate our facility, use the address as it appears below (Please Note:  There is no ”S” on Cochrans for the GPS)

Please plan on arriving between 12:40 and 12:50 to allow time to go through the security process.

Valid Federal Government/State/Local-issued photo identification is required to obtain entrance to the facility and all vehicles will be searched by NIOSH Security Officers.  All visitors must be escorted while on the campus.

Upon arrival at the NIOSH-Pittsburgh facility:

  1. Pull your car over to the right side of the entrance (gravel lot) 
  2. Exit the vehicle.  The Security Officer will search your car (inside including glove box, under seats, trunk and under hood).  No weapons, explosives, fireworks, knives, guns, crossbows, alcohol, or pets are permitted on site.            >> If you are arriving by taxi, have the taxi driver drop you off and our shuttle will escort you to the meeting location<<
  3. Enter Building 100 (Security), present valid photo identification (Federal Government/Local/State) and receive a visitor identification badge.  >>>> If you are a non-U.S. Citizen you must provide the same document submitted to the Visitor Management System (passport, visa and I94 card, or permanent resident card) as identification <<<<<<
  4. You will also receive a visitor parking pass which must be displayed on your dashboard while on site. 
  5. Both of these documents (Visitor’s Identification Badge and Visitor’s Parking Pass) must be returned to the NIOSH Security Officer at the booth when you exit the site.  
  6. Follow the signs for the AIHA meeting
  7. We will meet in building 19A before dispersing to the various labs in groups.

How to get here if not using GPS  -From Curry Hollow Road

At the bottom of the hill, you will stay in the left lane to continue straight on to Cochrans Mill Road.  (Nativity Church and school will be on your right).  When you get to the stop sign, you will proceed straight for 1.6 miles.  You will pass Broughton Fire Department, a pizza shop, and an auto repair shop.  When you see the stone sign, turn right into the gate.  Cross the tracks and park to the right of the entrance.
