Presentation Abstract:
My career as an industrial hygienist has spanned the years from 1975 to the present – years of significant political, legal, economic, scientific, technological, and social/cultural changes in the US. This talk will highlight some of the major shifts in the landscape – including the advent of the US Occupational Safety and Health Act, the growing importance of computers in our lives, and the pervasive presence of social media – and explore the ways those changes have affected the practice of occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS). However, the purpose is not so much to look at my journey but to motivate you to think about the various changes that will take place over your working lifetime, and to ponder the effect those changes will have on your practice of OEHS. What will your journey look like?

Speaker Biography:
Deborah Imel Nelson, Ph.D., CIH, earned her B.S.E.S. and M.S.E.S. from the University of Oklahoma College of Engineering, and her M.P.H. and Ph.D. in Environmental Health at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She has been certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene since 1981. Deborah has served as a US Department of Labor – Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) industrial hygiene compliance officer and as a professor of environmental science at the University of Oklahoma. For two years she was an Occupational Health Scientist with the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, where she conducted exposure assessments for the Global Burden of Occupational Injury and Illness. She recently retired as the Safety and Occupational Health Manager for the US Department of Agriculture, Veterinary Services, which was heavily involved in highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreaks in 2015 and 2016.
Deborah is a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, and is currently serving as the AIHA President.
Deborah’s husband Alan researches ancient earthquakes for the USGS earthquake center in Golden, Colorado. Her son Robert is an explosives safety specialist for the U.S. Army in McAlester, Oklahoma, and her son Andrew is a post-doc in chemical security at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Deborah and Alan live in Boulder, Colorado, where they enjoy hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and sharing pictures of three adorable grandchildren.
